Why call my cricket bats ‘Tempus Cricket’? Good question, and here’s the story behind the name.
Tempus is Latin for ‘Time’. How does time fit into cricket bats, well another great question?
Early one morning when I was getting ready for work, I flicked on the TV, and it just happen to be that the English Antique show was on. Just before I reached for the remote to change the channel to the news to get my boring morning Covid number updates, an antique vase came onto display. The 18th century vase had the words scribed ‘Tempus Fugit’ (Latin: Time Flies). The presenter explained that Tempus Fugit was usually associated with clocks, given the relationship that time is always moving. Although the presenter said it was unusual for a vase to display the name Tempus Fugit, it was the way the lettering was crafted on the vase that caught my eye. It was this moment that the antique design planted the seed for my cricket bat brand ‘Tempus Cricket’.
Ok, I can still hear you ask how Tempus relates to a cricket brand. Well, I didn’t want to follow the norm and use the initials of my name (SD) or use my family name (Delphin) as the brand, this has already been done many times over and I wanted something different that would last the time. Creating a brand, if you’ve ever had to do it, is bloody hard! Everyone has an opinion on what you should call it, and in the end, you go with what your gut tells you. So time after time or Tempus after Tempus (you see what I did there he he), I came back to this branding on the vase, and it was here that the slogan began…
It’s time for me to make cricket bats.
It’s time for you to buy that new bat.
It’s time we play that great shot.
It’s time for that first 6.
It’s time to hit that century.
It’s time for ‘Tempus Cricket!’
